Arla calls for one regulatory body - buy to let mortgages
18 August 2008
In news that may interest those with buy to let mortgages, the Association of Residential Lettings Agents (Arla) has called for one single body to monitor standards in rental property.
The body said it welcomes a report entitled Encouraging Responsible Letting, which was produced last week by the law commission.
However, it said it did not support the idea of having one monitoring body for the private sector and one for the social housing sector.
Head of operations at Arla Ian Potter commented: "We must start with a single code and a single set of standards. Otherwise we will end up with different monitoring for different standards."
Mr Potter also warned against a situation that led to different local authorities each having their own set of standards.
A proposal in the report to have greater local government involvement in monitoring standards has been welcomed by the National Landlords Association.
