Brits 'unwilling' to own homes - good news for buy to let?

02 October 2009

Written by David Whittaker

Some 16 per cent of adults in the UK have claimed that they do not want to own their own home.

According to research by the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), an increasing number of Britons are not interested in purchasing a residence they can call theirs.

Cardiff, Manchester, Brighton and Belfast are the parts of Britain where this sentiment is felt strongest, the data reveals.

With a number of people not wishing to take out a mortgage and purchase property, buy to let landlords could find their services are in demand.

However, it would appear that chief executive of the NAEA Peter Bolton King does not think these findings are positive.

Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the National Association of Estate Agents, said: "The recession has left many people feeling that they cannot get onto the property ladder."

The government must reform stamp duty in order to create a "level playing field" for those looking to get on the property ladder, he added.
