Tenants and homeowners are struggling with energy bills but still perform habits that waste money.
Confused.com carried out a survey, which found that some 73 per cent of Brits are worried about the cost of their winter fuel bills.
However, many of the same participants explained that they still sometimes leave their heating on all day when their home is empty.
Some 22 per cent of pet owners admitted to leaving central heating running when they are not in the house so that their animals are comfortable.
Head of energy at the organisation Gareth Kloet said: "It's disappointing that, whilst 76 per cent of home owners admit to being more aware of the energy they are using, they are not using this increased awareness as inspiration to bring their cost down."
Simple moves such as looking to switch to a cheaper tariff or wearing extra layers of clothing could save money, Mr Kloet claimed.
Another way to cut down on energy usage may be to install a more efficient boiler.
The government this week reminded property owners of the boiler scrappage scheme, which offers money towards the cost of a new appliance.
