Buy to let investment encouraged

05 October 2009

Written by Steve Olejnik

It has been suggested that now could be a good time to make an investment in buy to let property.

Keshav Thukaram, managing director of Smartlandlord.co.uk, has encouraged investors to try and find homes to add to their portfolios while they are still relatively cheap.

"A lot of professional landlords had been waiting for the downturn for a long time," he explained. "They're cash rich and many of them started investment in property in the last downturn."

However, he warned that the economy is still some way off from total recovery despite a number of positive signs in recent months.

As a consequence, the expert said, speculative buy to let investors who bought bricks and mortar during peak periods for the sector will have difficulty recovering their losses.

Mr Thukaram's comments follow Nationwide Building Society's latest house price data, which indicated that property values increased for the fifth consecutive month in September with a 0.9 per cent rise on August's figures.
