Buy to let landlords 'see improvement in rent arrears'

23 July 2010

Written by Simon Whittaker

There was a modest improvement in the rate of rental arrears experienced by buy to let property investors in the last three months, one organisation has said.

According to the National Landlords Association, the proportion of private rented sector professionals whose tenants were behind on their payments was 21 per cent, a slight decrease on the 24.5 per cent seen in the first quarter.

However, with over one in five landlords still facing this issue, chairman of the body David Salusbury advised buy to let investors to remain in contact with the occupants of their property to resolve any difficulties.

"It is critical that tenants and landlords communicate and work together to tackle financial problems before they result in a loss of rent or even the tenancy," he commented.

This comes after spokesman for Let Insurance Services warned that not enough portfolio investors were sufficiently protected against the possibility of tenant arrears.
