Buy to let mortgage holders should take care when appointing workmen, after research found many property owners have been victims of rogue builders.
According to Santander Insurance UK, almost one in five British homeowners have employed workmen who have damaged their properties.
More than £6.8 billion worth of damage has been caused - an average of £1,592 per job.
And the research noted that 39 per cent of Britons are considering home improvements over the next year, with the potential for more victims.
Chief executive officer at the organisation Miguel Sard said: "Unfortunately anyone can call themselves a builder, but the potential damage that could be caused by rogue tradesmen is staggering."
Many landlords and homeowners opt for the cheapest quote, but contractors should be recognised by trade bodies and buy to let owners would be wise to research the company before agreeing on work, he added.
The Federation of Master Builders recognises good-quality contractors and has approximately 12,000 vetted members in the UK.
