Commercial mortgage customers may be interested in predictions regarding consumer confidence.
According to the director general of the British Retail Consortium (BRC) Stephen Robertson, confidence will not return to the market until after the general election.
He told the audience at Birmingham's Totally DIY show that enthusiasm from customers would be in short supply until the vote.
"My instinct says actually the return of confidence has gone as far as it is going to go for now and I think it is on ice until we see the results of the election," Mr Robertson said.
During the recession the commercial sector has shown resilience compared with other industries.
Supermarkets have understood the importance of price to many UK households and other retailers may do the same, he said.
According to the BRC, the worst January sales growth for 15 years was seen in the UK last month.
On a like-for-like basis, retail sales in Britain fell by 0.7 per cent in the first month of the year compared with 2009.
