Commercial mortgage holders should check the security of their businesses after a number of buildings were broken into.
"Simple steps" could protect commercial premises from burglars, the BBC quoted the police as saying.
Thieves broke into five buildings in Dumfries and Galloway yesterday morning (March 22nd) and stole safes with more than £4,000 inside.
Hotels and shops were among the commercial property targeted by the criminals.
Removing all safe and security keys when working hours end and checking property is locked at the end of the day are among the tips offered by police.
And external security lighting may also act as a deterrent to would-be thieves.
Commercial property owners should report any suspicious activity that occurs, the police added.
The Home Office explains that the chances of being a victim of crime are at their lowest for 20 years, but that there are still steps that can be taken to ensure homes and businesses remain safe.
