Could legislation see more property development finance spent on energy-efficiency?

16 July 2010

Written by Michael Aglony

The introduction of the new Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency (CRC-EES) scheme may see more property development finance going toward making commercial properties more environmentally friendly, as one expert has said that it will set a benchmark that will help owners to lower their fuel usage.

According to Don Jordison, managing director at Threadneedle, reducing carbon emissions will also help to lower the cost of running a functional commercial space, which means there is already an incentive to retrofit buildings or design them to be energy-efficient.

"It just so happens that this legislation is coming through at a very low point in the economy so there is very much a parallel between the legislative need for lower energy and the need amongst occupiers and owners to get their bills down," he explained.

The CRC-EES scheme began on April 1st 2010 and is central to the UK's strategy for reducing carbon emissions.
