David Cameron 'disagrees with buy to let proposals'

31 March 2010

Written by Gavin Elley

The Conservative Party does not support changes to the buy to let market, which would place restrictions on shared housing.

David Cameron called for the Town and Country Planning Order to be revoked, which the National Landlords Association (NLA) says it is "delighted" about.

Head of Communications at the organisation Simon Gordon stated: "The government's policy on shared housing is both ill conceived and was rushed through without parliamentary debate."

But people are now realising the effect it will have on the buy to let sector - for landlords and tenants alike, he claimed.

The statement from the Conservative leader means that housing should be pushed up the agenda as an important election issue.

Mr Gordon added that giving local authorities the power to limit shared housing could cap buy to let accommodation for groups including migrant workers, students and those who cannot afford to rent alone.

And earlier this week the chairman of the NLA David Salusbury claimed that the Local Housing Allowance should also be reconsidered.

The allowance is not working as well as it should and many landlords are owed large sums of money, Mr Salusbury stated.
