FSB makes small business plea - commercial mortgages
19 May 2009
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has called for local councillors to focus on small firms in the forthcoming local elections.
In a statement, the pressure group listed a number of issues candidates should bear in mind during their campaigns.
One request - to make small business rate relief automatic - may help those with commercial mortgages.
"Business rates are the third highest expenditure for small businesses and over £400 million in rate relief goes unclaimed every year," the FSB explained.
Another measure suggested by the group that may help small business owners with commercial mortgages was the abolishment of a workplace parking levy and/or road charging.
"Local election candidates must put small businesses first," the FSB emphasised.
Earlier this year, the organisation revealed the result of a small businesses survey, which showed 33 per cent of FSB members noted their banks were imposing changes in their financial arrangements that made them less well off.
