'Good time' to invest in rental homes - buy to let mortgages

Now is a good time to invest in rental property, but only if the right financial backing such as buy to let mortgages are available, it has been claimed.

Chris Jenkins, a manager for Clarity Commercial, noted that landlords need to make solid plans rather than being "seduced" by the "rock-bottom" prices around at present.

"Buy to let properties are an excellent long-term investment provided that the investor buys correctly," he commented.

He urged those thinking of expanding their portfolios to consider factors such as cash flow, rental demand and capital growth.

Such issues are "vital" areas for landlords to take into account, Mr Jenkins explained.

Recently, 8.2 per cent of Association of Residential Lettings Agents members reported that landlords were purchasing more properties during the first quarter of 2008.

This compared to 3.5 per cent in the same period a year previously, the body added.
