Home automation could save money and energy

Homeowners or landlords may consider spending property development finance on home automation, after it was revealed that doing so could make houses more environmentally friendly and can cut costs.
Master inventor for IBM and visiting professor at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne Andy Stanford-Clark reveals he already implements such technology in his home.
Property can become more efficient in many ways as a result of the changes.
For example, intelligent heating may be used so that heat is directed to the areas of a property that require extra warmth.
Lighting may also be controlled, as they can be turned on and off when they are needed.
Mr Stanford-Clark said that both these systems can both be modified and placed on standby "according to the occupancy of the house".
"I saved approximately one-third on my electricity bills since I started monitoring and automating my home," he explains, adding that it has also reduced his carbon footprint.
The comments are in response to an EU initiative that is seeing smart-home technology implemented in Saarbrucken, Germany, to show how the system can be used.
