Landlords 'must comply with new energy law' - buy to let mortgages

25 September 2008

Landlords have been urged to make sure they comply with new energy-efficiency legislation being introduced on October 1st.

Specialist buy to let mortgages lender Paragon has highlighted the fact that the majority of people still have not obtained an energy performance certificate (EPC) - which will be a legal requirement in less than a week's time.

Research from the firm has shown that 81 per cent of owners have not acquired an EPC for their rental properties, which could lead to a £200 fine.

"We would advise landlords to get their EPCs sorted out as quickly as possible so that they are ahead of the game when it comes to re-letting a property," remarked managing director John Heron.

The National Landlord's Association has predicted that total fines for those who do not comply with the law could exceed £500 million nationwide.
