Landlords warned about gas safety - buy to let mortgages
02 July 2009
Landlords with buy to let mortgages have been issued with a reminder of their responsibilities by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the wake of a recent court case.
In June, Paul Bird from Tamworth pleaded guilty to four charges under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and was fined £2,000 and had to pay £2,220 in costs.
According to the HSE, he was the managing agent of a property that housed four people who were taken to hospital suffering suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
It emerged that there had not been regular gas safety checks taken at the residence and the appliances were be not maintained.
HSE investigating inspector Andrew Bowker said: "Landlords and managing agents must ensure that their gas appliances are checked for safety on an annual basis and are suitably serviced and maintained."
This comes three months on from the introduction of the new Gas Safe Register as the official stamp for gas safety in the UK.
