'Leave home renovations to pros' - property development finance

02 July 2009

Major development work on property should be left to the professionals, according to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC).

The director of the group, Andrew Leech, said that roofing, plumbing and electrical installations on UK homes should be undertaken by people who are trained in these fields, rather than part-time DIYers.

Property development finance is often needed for the major projects in the home and securing the right deal ahead of any renovation work can help provide the cash for people to make money on their investment later down the line.

Mr Leech suggested that the average householder should not conduct major DIY work because there is a safety risk and the chance that the development will not be done correctly.

It has often been stated that if the latter was to occur, the value of the property could decrease.

"Painting and decorating is one example of improving your home for the average DIY person, but in so far as jobs such as new baths and new kitchens, it is as well to get the expert in to do that sort of thing," the NHIC representative remarked.
