Legislation "not the answer" for landlords - buy to let mortgages
01 April 2009
Imposing additional legislation on the buy to let mortgages sector is "not the answer" to issues being seen in the private rental industry, it has been suggested.
It comes after several charities called for the law to be changed so that tenants are not made homeless if their landlord's property is repossessed.
Commenting on this, Tom Entwistle from LandlordZONE argued that the existing guidelines are "perfectly adequate".
"Where it often falls down is in the inefficient way it is implemented by the civil justice system," he remarked.
Mr Entwistle noted that the Council of Mortgage Lenders is looking to review the present situation so that there are no "nasty surprises" in store for occupants if their landlords fall into arrears.
Citizens Advice, the Chartered Institute of Housing, Shelter and Crisis have urged the government to give courts the power to delay repossession until tenants have found alternative accommodation.
