NLA: Government plans for landlords 'unworkable'

04 February 2010

Written by Steve Olejnik

Buy to let landlords would be negatively affected by government plans for the private rented sector, according to the National Landlords Association (NLA).

One such plan is a website allowing tenants to post their views on their landlords, which the organisation says would be unworkable and contain more negative comments than positive.

Landlords would also be listed on a national register in the government's proposals, but the NLA claims this would not root out rogue buy to let owners.

Rather, the register would encourage the "worst" landlords to go under the radar and penalise those that are law-abiding.

Chairman of the NLA David Salusbury said: "The NLA has said again and again that we do not need further regulation which over-burdens the overwhelming majority of good landlords."

Mixed messages from the government are confusing landlords and time would be better spent on allowing local authorities to use existing powers, he added.

Last week's plans put forward by the government for shared housing to require planning permission were also condemned by the NLA.
