NLA responds to tenant repossession campaign - buy to let mortgages

30 March 2009

Most landlords only fall into arrears on their buy to let mortgages if tenants fail to pay their rent, it has been stated.

The National Landlords Association (NLA) made the claim after several charities launched a campaign to offer more protection to those renting property from the risk of repossession.

NLA head of communications Simon Gordon said it is "absolutely right" that tenants should be shielded from repossession, but added that it is often due to problems with rental payments that investors get into trouble with lenders.

"Our latest research shows that 37 per cent of landlords are currently experiencing some form of rental arrears. This is bound to have an impact on the level of repossessions," he commented.

It comes following the launch of an initiative from Citizens Advice, Shelter, Crisis and the Chartered Institute of Housing.

This called for the government to change the law in order for people renting a home to be given time to find alternative accommodation before a property is taken into possession.
