NLA speaks out over "naming and shaming" - buy to let mortgages
13 October 2008
The National Landlords Association (NLA) has criticised the practice of "naming and shaming" tenants who fall behind with payments.
It comes after an agent in Liverpool claimed to have put up two signs outside properties revealing that the occupants had not paid their rent.
However, the NLA urged those with buy to let mortgages not to follow this example as it will only lead to the tenant becoming alienated.
"While we understand the threat to both landlords and letting agents of tenants failing to keep up with their rental payments, this form of public humiliation is a recipe for disaster," remarked spokesman Simon Gordon.
He added that landlords should follow the correct legal procedures if an occupant is consistently failing to pay their board.
Meanwhile, mortgage expert for Moneyfacts Darren Cook has stated that despite the gloom in the economy, there are sufficient mortgage deals on the market for borrowers to find a suitable product.
