PAYS scheme is 'fabulous'

Property development finance could be spent on making houses more energy efficient - a step which may offer monetary rewards in the future.

This is according to founder of whatgreenhome.com Gordon Miller, who says the government's pay as you save (PAYS) scheme is an "incredibly positive step".

Mr Miller explains that the idea to offer property owners the chance to install microgeneration technologies - paid for by the savings made from future reductions in energy bills - is "fabulous".

He says that it should be withheld regardless of the political party voted into power at the upcoming general election.

"People will always react to money - that is the main driver for the CO2 argument. You have got to incentivise people," Mr Miller claims.

As a mark of when the Copenhagen climate change conference was launched, the government introduced the PAYS scheme as a trial in 500 English homes last December.

Some £4 million has been spent financing the scheme, which has been trialled by homes in areas such as Birmingham and Sunderland.
