Rental sector commended - buy to let mortgages

The importance of the rental sector and buy to let mortgages has been emphasised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics).

According to the organisation, the private rented sector offers a "flexible approach to housing".

Benefits of the buy to let sector include the way it provides people with a choice of housing options and the chance to take job opportunities when they come along.

In a statement this week, Rics said: "Growth in the private rented sector must be encouraged to provide a choice of homes and as an alternative to owning a home."

Having a range of properties on the market allows people to "live in the appropriate property for their income and situation in life", it added.

Rics' comments come after the government announced it aims to make a number of improvements in the sector to boost the consumer protection and clamp down on bad landlords.

Any legislation changes should be implemented quickly and use existing legal structures, according to the group.
