Small businesses booming - commercial mortgages
23 August 2007
The number of small businesses in the UK has risen by almost one million over the past 13 years, according to the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.
The figures also show that the number of businesses operating in the UK as a whole rose by 2.9 per cent in 2006, in what is undoubtedly good news for landlords with commercial mortgages.
Responding to the figures, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) said that it would pay dividends to turn attention towards smaller enterprises as opposed to keeping the focus on bigger firms.
"Big businesses get most of the headlines and attention from government. That has to change if the UK economy is to remain strong and flexible enough to deal with the challenges that lie ahead," it commented, according to the Financial Times.
But small businesses have been hit this week by the Competition Commission''s decision to scrap interest rate incentives.
