Students 'make good tenants' - buy to let mortgages
16 September 2008
Despite the stereotype, the majority of students are actually good tenants, according to a new study.
A survey from buy to let mortgages lender Paragon has found that many landlords view the student sector as a desirable market to invest in.
It showed that 81 per cent of owners classed their student occupants as punctual rent payers and 90 per cent stated that they were well-behaved throughout the tenancy.
In addition, 95 per cent said that they had experienced strong demand for their properties.
Managing director John Heron commented: "There is always going to be a social element to university and some students will obviously take better care of a property than others, but generally they are a positive bunch to let to."
He added that yields in this sector can be stronger as many properties are let per room rather than per house.
Meanwhile, recent research from Halifax found that the average university attendee spends around £40 a week on food and £75 a week on rent.
