Use property development finance 'to build houses underground'

20 August 2010

Written by David Whittaker

People seeking property development finance to build their own home may consider constructing underground abodes, as one commentator said these subterranean properties are entering the mainstream.

Writing for the Daily Mail, Mark Hughes-Morgan reported architects are beginning to see the eco-friendly houses as a viable alternative to traditional varieties.

In a time when people may be more conscious of the energy-efficiency of their home, underground properties could be a good choice, as one expert told the journalist they were "the only building form that can mitigate CO2".

"Since 1997, all the buildings I have designed have achieved zero heating," founder of SEArch Architects Jerry Harrall told the commentator.

Instead, the body of the building insulates it so that it releases warmth slowly, keeping the interior at a comfortable temperature, the newspaper explained.

Those who would like to use their property development finance to produce an energy-efficient home but would prefer to live above ground level may instead consider fitting insulation.

Writing for Castanet, Hugh Cairns recently noted padding the loft can keep the house cool in the summer as well as warm in the winter, lowering the amount of power needed to keep abodes from getting too hot.
